Tell tale signs
Im going to look at a couple of 12v over the next couple of days and wondered how/what to look for if the pump has been modded? Since I have never driven one stock I dont know what it should feel like so is there tell tale signs that someone has been playing around?

Hum...... lets see, on my 95 I would say the pump has been tampered with if you see paint scarred on the round top screw in plug towards the rear of the P7100. This would be the AFC cover, also there is 4 screws holding the cover on, the two lowers also hold the fuel solenoid, the upper rear is normal type ,and the upper front is a special deal where you cannot unscrew it really, its supposed to have the head chiseled off then removed after the cover is off. Ive read one can whack it with a flat chisle and make a groove then possibly unscrew it. If theres a regular screw/allen head there its been opened. This is where the fuel plate is. If its a stick model see if they have addressed the 5th gear problem. Injector wise, id say look again for chipped off paint on the fuel line nuts. Also the KDP issue is something to look for being repaired.
Good luck.

Thanks apache
There both at car lots so I dont expect much usefull info from the dealers so I was just looking for any little things. That one that needs to be broken off sounds like a good one I will have to find out more on that one like where it is exactly. What about the stock rpm, what should a stock 98 stick rev to? Wouldnt you be able to tell if work was done by that?

Im no expert but unless the govener was messed with the RPM range should be the same. My 95 is stock and a stick. It will hit 2500 RPM + but its kinda pointless as it drops off in power. Do some searching on the P7100 pump for pics of the AFC housing. If it has guages stock boost should be around 18/20 max, if the wastegate is disabled as mine is I can hit about 24 really winding it up. I think the pump will also show which version it- 180/215 hp etc. I cant really say regarding seat of the pants compared to a 24 v cause Ive never driven one, but your basic 12v stock isnt all that impressive IMO. Also my 95 with 3.55 gears and 265/75 16 tires runs at about 2K RPM at 70. You might find one with 4.10 gears so it will run higher. Pop the hood and look directly up by the latch for the build info, should say what gears etc. I wish I had 4.10s myself so I could run some 35`s comfortably, I dont think with 3.55 it would be to good, definatly on take off in 2nd. and reverse would suck even worst when loaded or trailering.
PS, never trust what a Used car dealer tells you, typically they dont know squat about what they sell. They bring vehicles in from other counties bought from auction. I could write a book about this after my experiances with the liars in my county.

you can also check under the solenoid to the left of the throttle lever there is a plug there. This is where some go in, to install govenor spring kits. This plug should have a saftey wire holding it in unless someone has cut it out.. check to see if allen plug on top has been wrenched on. This is where the starwheel is for pre boost fueling.. The last thing you may look at is the delivery valve holders. They are the splined bodys where the injection lines come out of the pump. They should have yellow paint on them. check to see if they have been tampered with..
