TC lockup issue
I bought a 95 Ram2500 cummins auto CC longbed in Dec. it had a few issues I'm working my way through. one is the TC is only locking up when I pass someone, or get on it at highway speeds. as soon as I get to cruising speed it disengages. I checked the trouble codes nothing there. so I put in a Tranny temp gauge. interestingly the temp never gets above 150. but even then no lockup. then I tried the TPS it was dirty and a little sluggish on return. so I cleaned it, still no lockup. overdrive shifts fine, other then on a couple of very cold mornings. does this sound like a temp sensor problem? or am I going in the wrong direction?

I had to replace my kickdown cable or TV cable as my shop called it. It helped but also check your throttle cable, they can be very loose, mine was over 2" loose and instead of paying for a new one I just used the thicker zip ties, 12 of them to be exact, and that helped the most. Other than the "built" tranny and a #8 plate with a boost fitting...
Have you dropped your pan and changed the filter?? If it is good then I would have a low stall tc put in and a shift kit, I wasn't so lucky and my tranny was fried when I bought it so I had to replace the whole shibang... 4k bucks

where is the trany temp sensor for your gauge located ?
did you check the tps for smooth voltage increase as it could have a badd worn spot even if cleaned ?
maby tth temp sensor ?
how is the fluid and filter ATF+4 right !

Your problem is different!!!
The 95 has a real governeor. It has a pair of solenoids on Valve body.
One for OD and the other for LU. There are several inhibits to LU. They are vehcile speed, throttle opening, temperature and perhaps some I've forgotten. The PCM looks at inputs and duty cycles the LU sol until LU is achieved.
Could be a VB issue also. Several valves move to achieve LU.

Sounds like you have a bad temp sensor its in the transmission hot line....I had many problems with these sensors going out and finally I just replaced it with a 10K ohm resistor which is cheaper then paying $35.00 for a sensor

While I had the TPS off to drill the holes to spray the cleaner in. I checked the resistence of it. no spikes or dips in the resistence through sweep.
One of the first things I did was pump out 6 Quarts of tranny fluid though the cooling line. then dropped the pan and changed filter with a brass screened one. and filled it up with ATF+4. while I had the pan off I noticed very little clutch material ( truck has 272,000 on it) and the bottom of the pan has evidence of a recent rebuild. (the ridges in the pan where slitely crushed and scraped up like the tranny's weight had been had been on it.)
This is not making it undrivable. I'm just trying to get the best mpg I can. and driving down the highway I'm running 1800-2000 RPM.

That sounds like an idea. does anyone know what type thermocouple the stock sensor is? or is it an RTD?

ok you did not say what speed you are going at 1800 -2000 rpm ?
that is what i see at app 70 mph 2000 rpm 265 / 70/ 17 .
i get best mpg at 64 mph app 1700 -1900 rpm 21.4 empty !
next time use the regular cloth filter , those screen filters do not remove fine particles that can wind up wedged between valve body and valves causing wear and in solenoid magnets .

how do you Replace a Sensor with a Resistor in a oil line ?

1800-2000 is 60-65 at 70 I'm pushing 2200. I plan on puting an extenal filter in the cooling line. I wanted to make sure I had enough flow. as for the sensor it screws in the hot line. to replace it with a resister I guess you would just unplug it. then plug a resister in the plug it's a 2 terminal plug.

Yes to replace the sensor just unplug it and plug in a 10K ohm resister then tape this connection up to protect it from weather.....I then used the old sensor hole to install a transmission temp gauge sensor
Radio Shack has resisters I think they cost $1.00 for 5 of them
