TC Lock up questioN

Hello group,

I have a 1998 1 ton dually, 12V automatic (47RE). I just installed a rebuilt tranny about 1000 miles ago and all worked well until a few days ago. The torque converter will no longer lock up. How can I tell if it is the solenoid or the clutch slipping?

Also, where is the solenoid located?

Thank you.

The solenoid is in the valve body. If you have a wiring schematic, you might tap the wire for T/C lock and do some diagnosis.

I suspect the PCM applies 12 volts positive to energise the solenoid. You can ride down the road and test it. You can also apply 12 volts to see if the T/C locks when you apply power.

Keep in mind, there are a few parameters that must be met to lock the T/C. If you have the trans temp sensor, it may be bad or not connected well. This can cause the T/C not to lock. Make sure you have a good connection at the trans temp sensor.

If the PCM never tells the T/C to lock, then you could have an input sensor failed or something wrong with the PCM itself (not likely).

You may also consider just having a local shop plugging in a scanner to the ADL under the dash and performing some quick diagnosis.

I installed the manual lock up switch , but it still does not lock up, Does anyone have a diagram of where the solenoid is, so I can try and apply 12v to see if it activates?

Also, what kind of scanner is required? Is it OBDII?

You probably need to go to a trans shop. They will have the right tools to get deeper quickly. You can buy what you need, and end up with tools that you may never need again.

Your truck should be OBDII.

The solenoids are on the valve body and are accessable when you drop the pan.HTH.
