Synthetic gear oil

I'll be changing the oil in both differentials, the transmission, and the transfer case in the near future...hopefully this weekend if I can find a local dealer for the oil.

I don't want to start a war here, but my question is what brand should I use? I've heard of Amsoil, Redline, and Royal Purple. Am I missing any? Also, which is generally cheaper and easier to find. ???

How about this...if you use synthetic, please post what you are using, where you got it (and what you paid if you remember) and what you think of it. Also, if you could include what weight your using for each component.

Thanks. 8)

Re:Synthetic gear oil

Mobil 1 is probably the easiest true synthetic to obtain, available at many retail locations. I've seen their 75W-90 GL-5 gear oil recently for $6.99 per quart. The others you've mentioned are probably in the same price range. But if you have to mail order the stuff, it's heavy, so shipping costs can add up.

I'm currently running Amsoil in my truck. Series 2000 75W-90 GL-5 in the differentials, and NV4500 5 speed. Universal ATF in the transfer case. I paid $8.99 per quart for the ATF from a local autoparts store. I then got a preferred customer account thru amsoil, $30 per year, and ordered the gear lube at wholesale price, but adding the shipping charges, their isn't much savings. Not economical unless buying in large quanities.

I'd look at using Red Line MT 90 for the NV4500. While being in the "hard to get" category, it's rated GL-4, which means it has about 1/2 the sulfur/phosphorus content of a GL-5 lube. That means it's non-corrosive to synchros and bushings, and provides "traction" for the synchro's to operate. I've looked online and have found it for $6.79 per quart, and of course, plus shipping. But no club fee. I think I'm going to order this stuff and change the amsoil out of my transmission soon.

Re:Synthetic gear oil

Amsoil Series 2000 75-90 front and rear. OEM limited slip. No modifier. Good differential function. I'm happy.
