I looked into that a little bit for my 1992 but didn't get too deeply into it. I wasn't interested in the newer light-duty truck Allison like Chevy's using in the Duramax application. I was looking at a 245 (I think that's the model number). It's an older 4 speed non-OD type that's fairly common and seems pretty simple and bulletproof. Being non-OD I was also looking at changing my gear ratio from 3.54 to something like 3.07. What also attracted me is that you can get them with a retarder which would be pretty cool--no need to install an exhaust brake.
I never ended up seriously pursuing it because of all the work it entailed, but it would've been pretty cool.
