Strange Timing Woes
So i found out my timing pin on my 95' was broken off at the tip [undecided] ....so round after round of trying to locate TDC, we thought we had it. Unfortunatly, we came up with 2 sets of timing degrees depending on Lift of plungers..one was 2.9mm=8-9 degrees & then a number that was more accurate with 16 degrees {of course,i thought no one had cranked it before}. So we shot low and decided to add 5.1 mm of lift causing severe white smoke at idle and injection pump knock louder than you can imagine and wouldn't run at all, somewhere around 40 degrees . Today,we re-set it and {hopefully got TDC right this time}. We went back to original 2.9mm lift and advanced it to 3.4mm...which might be 18 or so degrees....i think it's too high in nuetral at 1800-2500rpm it belches white smoke, but not under load...does anyone know of a fool proof way to find TDC or tell me if 18 degrees is way to high on a stock head gasket if i be careful with it...and i need the correct plunger #'rs for a california 1995 auto truck.>---Thanks..Greg

Re:Strange Timing Woes
You can find TDC by using the #1 intake valve.<br>Us whats left of your pin to get close to TDC and then rotate past TDC. Turn the intake valve down 5 turns, then back the engine up until it stops against the valve, then mark the balancer. Rotate the engine all the way around until it hits the valve again and mark the balancer. The point between the 2 marks is TDC.

Re:Strange Timing Woes
MDW is correct on finding tdc. JGK and I have used this method many times and it works great. Apply some masking tape to the balance wheel on the crank and mark your two sets of lines and then scribe your center line. Fabricate a pointer made of a piece of welding rod or coat hanger and install it off one of your oil pan bolts. Align it with one of the two marks first when the piston is against the valve, release the valve and then rotate to your tdc mark. Good Luck, Lon

Re:Strange Timing Woes
Thanks for the info gentlemen...we figured we got the timing back down to 18 or 18.5 based on 3.4mm of lift..i hope i can live with this...the white smoke when cold kills me..it's bad. Also on deceleration from 2800 rpm.. [undecided]...Greg
