Unhappy Stock Pump timing

I recently replaced a busted gear case due to a first hand experience of KDP. I just finished buttoning everything back together this morning. When I tried to start the truck, It would not fire. A friend of mine who has been helping Sheepishly explained to me that he turned the injection pump while it was off the truck. So I am guessing the timing is way off.

As the truck was cranking all It would do, was a little greyish smoke out the tailpipe every now and then. The fuel system seems to be primed as I am getting fuel to the injectors when They are cracked open.

Nowmy question is, Is there a good writeup anywhere on how to time the pump with the pump timing pin, with the engine at top dead center? I know where the pin is in the pump but have never had it out. But how do you Make sure the engine is at top dead center?

I was sure I'd get to drive this thing again today, but I guess i'll have to wait a few more days. Thanks

So If I pin the camgear and the pump everything should be OK. There won't be any issues with being 180* out or anything? This is the first time I have ever done anything timing related. Still kinda lost. Thanks for the help.

First off, your friend who "played" with the pump, needs to time the truck in my opinion. Assuming you have the marks on the cam and crank lined up like they should be (which I imagine that they are otherwise you would have heard some bad noises), and you then bring the motor to TDC with the pump gear loose and the pump pinned, then yes, you should be ok. There's still a bit of an arguement on how accurate that is using this method. Most feel the dropped valve method and a dial indicator will get it closer. But using this method the truck "should" run, barring any other unmentioned debauchery your "friend" did...

I got it to running today,It was way easier than I thought it was going to be. Evidently the timing had slipped, cause the truck has way better response now than it did before. Sounds like it is idling smoother too. Could be all the new parts though im not sure.

Thanks for the help
