Starter not working!

> Anyone had this problem? I used the truck several times that day and one time it would not start. No click or anything! Tried several times and then it started! Got home shut it off came out a few min. later to start it and nothing! Jumped to the solenoid and no problem, starter would turn over. Solenoid was not getting power. Went to power box under the hood and pulled the starter relay. Found that terminal 86 was not getting power. Terminal 86 is the terminal that powers the relay when you go to start on the ignition. The clutch sw. was fine. I jumped terminal 30 to terminal 86 engine started right up. It looks like no power from the ignition sw. Tried a new relay, nothing! Any ideas?

Re:Starter not working!

You should be able to get the ignition switch for a auto parts for about $30-$35 maybe less.

Re:Starter not working!

;D Thanks Partsman. I think that I have the problem fixed. When I took the switch out I found two wires on the flat plug that had broken inside the insulation that could be the problem, fixed that and it starts fine. Checked on the cost of the sw at Autozone and low and behold they have one in stock at $22. I guess I'll see if the problem is fixed or not. Thanks all for the info.

Re:Starter not working!

Hey Captain - How did you identify the starter relay from all those others in that power box? Thanks.

Re:Starter not working!

When you remove the cover Richard there is a diagram on the inside of the relay cover which tellls you which relays are where and what they do.

Good Luck

Re:Starter not working!

Richard another way is to look at the schematic in your manuel but like Scuba said it's inside the cover.

Re:Starter not working!

don't know about those but I had to replace the main contacts in mine. I first went to the local parts store and they told me that I had to buy a whole new starter...HA! Yeah right! Napa $15 and I was on my merry little way for the last two years.

Re:Starter not working!

Contacts are the only thing I have ever seen go wrong with these starters. 8)
