Squealing when in 4WD
First snow this weekend and first time in 4WD for some time. Drove about 15 miles before the truck developed an ever increasing squeal from underneath. The sound is a little like brake pad squealers against a rotor. Increases and decreases with speed. Stops completely when stopped or out of 4WD and restarts immediately when shifted back into 4HI. 4WD seems to work fine otherwise. Light comes on and off as usual. I’m thinking it’s the front driveshaft U joint, but not sure. Does the front shaft turn or free wheel when out of 4WD? Both front axel joints have been replaced. Transfer case fluid is good. Has anyone experienced this problem or have an idea what it may be?

Finally had a moment to slide underneath to take a closer look. NCYZ1V you are right on. The shaft does indeed turn freely when out of 4WD. I was surprised to find the squeal was easily duplicated by turning the shaft with my hand. The sound is coming from the front U joint. I dropped the shaft out last night with the intention of a couple simple U joint replacements but quickly learned the rear CV joint has a little more to it. I’m going to press out the joints this weekend. Any hints on R&Ring the CV joint would be greatly appreciated.
