Smoke'n Cummins

My dad is looking at a stock 95 CTD 5spd 107k thats a real smoker. The idle smoke we can fix when we bump the timing and the cat and muffler fall off. The part I don't know how to fix is the blue smoke when the truck idles down between shifts. We got the truck warmed up and ran the **** out of it. When you run engine to the gov. and then shift blue smoke comes out of the pipe while it winds down. Will the stuff above fix this or do I need to do something else?

Blue smoke usually indicates burning oil.

Does it look like someone has been into the tamper proof part of the injection pump?
They could have slid the plate full forward or turned the star wheel all the way towards the engine. Might need to back them off.

Rings/Valves on these motors (engines?) don't seem to wear out to often, so burning oil usually comes from somewhere else.

The Turbo. You can rebuild it with new seals and bearings. Although I haven't "just rebuilt" a turbo, the kits shouldn't be more than $150 for a plain jane rebuild.

You probably have oil leaking by the seals on the turbo, and burning in the exhaust.

That's my $.02

I had the same thought as Merrick. I've never rebuilt a turbo myself and don't see that it would be all that tuff, but the pros say leave it to experts because it should be balanced afterwards.
These guys have seal rebuild kits for $35 complete for $75. Also have a downloadable instruction manualhttp://www.turboparts.info/pages/634264/index.htm

No its not burning oil, its a fuel type problem. The pump doesn't look like its been tamper with. An old man that never towed anything with it owned it so I dont think he pumped it up.

Pull the valve covers .... check and make sure all the valve stem seals are present ... I've seen several that were missing seals .... easy fix if that is what it is .....
