Smoke on startup

Started my truck this morning and the smoke was huge. Has been puffing a little bit on startup for a while but this was BIG! after maybe 20 to 30 seconds it cleared and was fine.Started again after sitting for about an hour and nice puff of black smioke then ok. Maybe injector leaking? truck runs great and fuel mileage is still about 16 around town. How do I figure out WHICH injector if that is it?

.

you can take them out and have them pop tested, or you can crack each injector one by one. start with the #1 cylinder, work your way back, if you hear a tone change in the engine, then the injector is good, keep working your way back until you find an injector that doesn't make the tone change. if this doesn't work, then look elsewhere for a problem such as timing, air leak in fuel system, etc. by the way, be very careful when cracking the injectors, getting diesel fuel slicing into your skin is not fun at all.

Is your truck usually plugged in?
If so perhaps a breaker or plug failed last night and you only thought it was plugged in.

Before you start pulling injectors, how cold was it when you started it? Nice white smoke with a bluish tint?

If the smoke clears up by itself, it most likely isn't an injector, just normal cold weather smoke.
