Slow Starting in 80 degree weather???

Ok, I have two new batteries in my truck, 1000CA/800CCA each, all cable connections at battery are clean and appear good and tight same with the connection at the starter.

Starter was rebuilt by a reputable shop about 3-4years ago, and I had personally replaced the contacts with HD ones at this time. So I ***-u-me the starter should be good.

When I turn the motor over it cranks over very slow almost as if the batteries are dead and after about 3 rotations will start, but makes me nervous each time.

If I push the throttle pedal down about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way It fires on about half a crank (but still sounds slow). This has been going on for about 3months now.

I am unsure if I should fabricate custome batery terminals and 2/0 awg cables, replace the starter, clean the injectors, or what?

Any ideas?

Honestly, it sounds like the starter.

My truck was recently behaving exactly as you describe. It already had a reman starter in it since before I bought it. I kept thinking it was batteries, electrical connections, etc. It finally would not turn over in a store parking lot one night. Compression started it to get it home. A new ND starter from a local automotive electrical shop later and it's back to like new. Barely have to bump the key and it's off and running.

I would have the starter checked/tested before going any farther.

Ditto on the starter. Doesn't matter if the motor isn't getting any fuel, if it turns over slow with fresh batteries (check voltage of each battery disconnected to be sure you don't have one bad one) then the starter is usually the culprit, unless you have severe oxidation at any terminals.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the contacts again. Problem is if you let them go for too long, the starter motor draws much more power then needed because of a poor connection (low voltage) and ends up burning itself out. Ask how I know!

Contacts in the starter were replaced with Larry B's Heavy Duty contacts about 5 years and 60k miles ago. At this time the entire starter was rebuilt by what I believed to be a reputable starter shop. Do you think this is still the problem?

I had a slow crank problem and it was my battery cables. I made new ones and it took care of all my problems.... but you never know with electronics.

Years and miles don't make much difference, it all depends on how much you start the truck.
If you start the truck and drive ten miles between starts the starter will wear out faster than someone one drives 500 miles between starts.
Bad batteries that equal low voltage eat up the contacts twice as fast as correct voltage.

LarryB may still sell a rewire kit for "clicking" starters. When I did my LarryB contacts in a brand new starter, I still thought it was sluggish. I installed the wiring kit and it spins over really fast... very impressive. It's a simple deal where you are not running the starting amps thru the switch and old factory wires. There is a relay that allows direct current from your batteries to run the starter and simple low amp 12V goes thru old wiring and switch just to "trip" the relay. LarryB sold it for $25 in 09.

I just went to site..$26.95 now
