Slipped Timing? I'm out of answers...videos inside

Well I had a low boost - high EGT problem since I got back from training and moved and I thought it was just holes in the intercooler. I fixed that last week and have no problem getting 38-39psi. I thought that my lack of PSI was my EGT problem, but it's not. The truck has similar high EGT's empty or towing a 40ft gooseneck. Towing they are more pronounced, but they are still pretty bad empty. I thought maybe the turbo needed more fuel to lite since it doesnt come on until 1900-2000rpm, but I am seeing EGT and other problems before the turbo comes into play. It's I changed the fuel filter and pin spring modded the OFV last weekend.

The EGT's @ idle in park are 300-325 degrees, but put it in gear and they rise to and hold at 600-625 degrees. Put it back into park and it drops to 325. Video of Park to Gear

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...deoid=54202157

Then free rev the motor from idle. It pops, sputters, stumbles, and blows flame. First video is revving to 2250 then 2750. Second video is revving to 2250, then 2500, then 3000. You can see and hear the popping and even the flames. This never happened until I got the timing "set to 16.5 degrees". I thought the popping was due to the cold in Ohio, but now it's still doing it in New Mexico. The mechanic said my timing was around 14 degrees before he messed with it.

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...deoid=54202921

Here is a crude video of me holding 70mph and then accelerating to 80mph. Try to watch the pyro, I know it's hard, but I think I try to call out the EGT's/Speed 1050/70mph/2100rpm - 1350 during moderate accel - 1150 holding 80mph

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...deoid=54203300

After revving the crap out of it I drove home and the EGT's dropped, as if maybe the timing slipped? 950/70mph - 1250 during moderate accel - 1050/85mph - I have no idea, same highway, just opposite direction

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...deoid=54203881

Current mods - 1997 180hp Cummins - 0 plate, AFC, Star full forward - 62/65/14 turbo - 5" exhaust - supposedly 16.5 timing - DTT Trans - BHAF - 3000 GSK washer mod

Did you check your timing to see if it was off?

Well I set timing back to stock 14 degrees [Thanks Tate]. I let it warm up and then started slowly reving it to 3000. It was smooth until about 2500 then it started lightly breaking up. So I took the dirty BHAF off and it revs up to 3000 no problem, it does however feel like its out of fuel that high. Perhaps a real 3 or 4000 GSK instead of the washer mod? Although throttle response is back just like the first time after doing the washer mod.

I took it on a short test drive and the only conclusive results I could get was that the EGT's are still higher than I want them and the boost levels are about the same as before. I'm thinking about throwing these 5x.014's in and seeing if the turbo will light sooner therefore catching the EGT's before they get too high. Still idles in gear @ 600 degrees [EGT]?

I'll make more observations tomorrow when I have more than a mile or two of driving. I do have a delivery valve socket on the way...just in case.

Fuel is the next area of interest. I'm going to get a fuel pressure gauge setup... not sure where to put it, I'm out of pods. Oh, by the way do the 97's have the pre filter screens? If so, where?

There is the filter screen in the Fuel heater bowl, and I believe one in the tank. But before you go through that, some pressures would help.

did you happen to get these 5X.014's from pure diesel power? the ones i got where mixed matched pieces of crap with a drilled out body and a different tip.... they popped all different too, the bars were anywhere from 130 bar to 325 bar... i got screwed badly on my injectors, so if i were you i would never buy anything from pure diesel power

i had the same exact problems with my worn out stock injectors, and the soposedly "new" injectors that i got. missed and fired wrong and blew white smoke, so before you do anyhting make shure your injectors aint the problem

Yes I did. I just pinned the pump and motor back to stock timing.

I didnt have problems with the stock injectors, and the 5x.014's are from a guy I know in the midwest who does really good work. They are actually working really well. I'll never buy any injectors from people who are basically just middle men, beware because that's almost everyone.
