Short Exhaust

Short Exhaust
The back part of my exhaust system fell off, and I think the truck is actually quiter now, maybe.
So what I am wondering is if there are exhaust systems available for our trucks that exit just before the rear wheel rather than after it? Basically, if I put an elbow in mine, that is what I have. I was just wondering what you all thought. Is it even leagal? Seems like it would reduce back pressure quite a bit, it feels like it on mine.
Right now the truck is in the shop, and think they will fix it to be like the original if they get to it today.

There's a 2nd gen 24v that's just down the road from my friend's house that has this same setup. Looks like 5", and dumps before the rear wheel. It looks good, and it sounds good. The only issue I can see from it is covering the passenger side rear wheel with soot.

Source Automotive sells a kit that exits before the rear wheel. Like mentioned, it'll make your wheel dirty. It will also be a lot louder. With a straight through exhaust you don't have to worry about backpressure.

I made my own. 3" down pipe, 4"mid-pipe, 4" 90-degree elbow with a 5" Chrome slant cut tip.
I originally had it straight piped. I sounded WICKED !!
My wife wouldn't ride in it cause it was SO LOUD! So...,I ended up slapping a 4" MRBP straight thru muffler in-line. Mellowed it out quite abit. Still pretty mean sounding.
Well....my wife doesn't ride in it too much, so I'm pondering taking the muffler out and going STRAIGHT piped again!

legality depends on your specific state- I had been running Cat only for years- tailpipe fell off, muffler rotted through, just took em off. This last inspection the guy gave me all kinds of crap about missing emissions pieces (muffler), no tailpipe, non stock tail pipe location, yadda yadda... I'm pretty sure as long as the exhaust exits beyond the passenger compartment it's legal in most states (I told him as such and he said not in MA- further discussion about it with him got him also stating stacks were illegal in MA despite several trucks with them)
I was planning on the same thing, but the sooty wheels thought had me just leave it dumping under the bed- now I have the stock tailpipe back with the Volant muffler just to make that guy happy.
