Replacing the starter

Starter is about to go out so I'm replacing it. I've replaced starters in other vehicles in the past. Anything different that I may have to deal with on the Cummins?

Why are you replacing it as opposed to repairing it?

I would be inclined to do so but it's my only vehicle, and I don't think the local repair shop could pull it off in a day. I'll call them and see.

Repair it yourself.....it's pretty easy.
You may just need new contacts in the solenoid.

Exactly. I replace the contacts in mine a couple of years ago and it is still going strong.

I just replaced mine last week. It's pretty easy and took no time at all. The three bolts holding it to the bell housing are a 10mm 21 piont bolt head.

It's easy...I did mine right after I got my '95....contacts were going.
I just replaced the whole thing; figured I need it for work & after 205,000 miles & 12 years, it was about due.

I installed Larry Bs kit at about 150k. At about 400k I pulled the started apart and swapped positions of the contacts because I learned from the first rebuild that one side wears more than the other. They showed very little wear compared to the original contacts (that I carry in my toolbox for emergency repair.).
