Replace Engine or Sale Truck

Just picked my truck up from the local Cumnins shop, and they are telling me that I need a complete reman engine....$8190.00

They put it on their dyno, and couldn't get it past 100hp before it was puking oil out the breather...

I bought the truck a few months ago knowing that the engine had some
blow-by, but I didn't think it was that bad b/c it seems to drive great.

anyhow lets hear what you guys seem to think.
shoulld I....

A. Keep the truck and shop around for an engine to drop in myself....or

B. Sell the truck knowing that I should still get my money out of it even with a motor that seems to be on it's way out (I've only gotten $4,500 in it.) It's a great looking truck. it's just got some miles on it...(275k)

It should have went into the 24v engine section. Think anybody could help me get it moved?

275K is not "some miles". That's actually nothing at all on these engines. There is no reason that these engines should wear out before 800,000 miles, and even then that would still be conservative estimate. Someone ran it out of oil or SOMETHING!!! That is just not right, and it makes me wonder what the rest of the truck looks like, maintenence wise.'

Since you already have so much money into the truck I'm with everyone who is telling you to rebuild it.

IMO you need to find out what is causing your blow-by
Is it the piston ring/s or H/G or??
If you have a shop to work in, it will cost you very little to pull it apart and look yourself and it will need to come apart anyway. I would say you could do a full rebuild for less than $4500

If u have a couple tools and time u can get a junkyard motor for around 2k and drop it in urself. Some places have 6-12 month warrenty on that stuff. $4500 for a 2001 with a bad motor is still IMO a steal. You know u came to this section for a reason, throw a 12v in!!! lol

"There is no reason that these engines should wear out before 800,000 miles"

Actually, there are may reasons. Not changing oil, running low on oil, allowing debris/sand intot he air intake. In other words, neglect can easily kill one of these things. So can over bombing it.

But I'm sure the intended wording would be more like :

There is no reason that these engines should wear out before 800,000 miles with proper maintenance and care.

The truck was fleet maintained for 95% of it's life, so it's very possible that the routine service has been neglected.
First thing I did when I bought the truck was change the oil, air filter, and fuel filter. They all seemed to be way over due...

I'm going to start looking for a used engine to install myself, but if I can't find one then the truck will have to go back to were it came from....EBAY...LOL

Yeah, that's what I meant. Thanks for the precise elaboration.
