I have heard somewhere that it takes 5 tank fulls to clean it out of your system. Dont know how much faith I put into that number though because there are a lot of factors to consider. I pumped about 10 gallons in my old ford powerstroke before in an emergency when I was low on fuel and didnt want to run out on the way to town, about 7 or 8,000 miles (16-18 tanks) later I was probed at a tractor pull and passed

I had a friend get caught a couple of years ago and got a $1500. fine and was warned the second time could be up to ten years in jail and a felony record. I don't know about other states, but probably half the farmers here in Idaho are running it. Ive ran it before in my ford 6.9 when I ran out of fuel and never noticed a difference in performance or smoke. I do know our transportation department and our state police are really cracking down on it.

I beleive there is a certain color Tablet you can put into the tank to neutralize the color, not to be RED if checked?

farm diesel

Wow! You guys running farm diesel are braver than I. One of my neighbors got busted and after the Texas Comptroller got done with him, the IRS went after him. The fine was pretty big, but what gets you is when they tell you that you have to go back and pay taxes on the farm fuel you've purchased. I don't know how far they go back, or how they calculate it, but any way you do the math, it ain't cheap. DPS checks for it on a regular basis around here.

while we're on the "RED" subject, why would they make STA-BIL red and advertise it as good to use for diesel fuel?

Just because your fuel is red doesn't mean you're busted.
The red color is just the trigger they use to check for chemical tracers added to the dye. Same goes for anything you do to hide the dye, the tracers will still be there. They will test your fuel for tracer no matter what off color they find.

I may be wrong, but if I recall correctly here in Texas, if you have farm plates on your trucks you can run red as long as you're within 100 miles of your designated farm address/location, you're good to go.

Like I said could be, and probably am wrong, but I coulda sworn that that how it goes round bout these parts.

I'm friends with a man that checks all the pumps in our county. He said first time gettin caught was $10,000 and 48 hours in jail. Second time was $20,000 I beleave and I can't remember on the jail time but it did go on your record as a felony. The dot people got bad there for a little while on drivin around and checkin tanks on peoples trucks and trailers and equipment. My dad got checked three times in two weeks by three different men. Lucky he wasn't runnin any dye in the truck at the time. lol

I've never been checked but it seems like the citizens of the USA have a small document that mentions something about unreasonable searches and seizures. So it sounds like a DOT official can, anytime they like, ask to have a look in your fuel tank? No warrant necessary? Again, I dont know for sure. Ive heard you can refuse to let them look. Someone said they have a deal they put at your exhaust pipe that can detect the red dye. I will let you guys know if i ever do get checked. I will tell them a better place to put that probe.
