Post puff of smoke

I'm sort of curious here about something my '96 215bhp unit has done since I purchased it three years ago. Normally it's never a problem as I do not shift at 2500 rpm. However if I do run past 2500, the power drops off sharply and I get quite a plume --much more than a puff-- of black and grey smoke. As I said, if I do not rev it that high, there is no problem. Just wondered if anyone else has this and what causes it? Thanks.

They all do it, that's why many folks add a governor spring kit.
