Possible slipped timing? Help with diagnoses please!
I have a 1997 12v 2500 4x4 5 speed with 220k on the odometer. I have had the truck 2 years.
When I got it the truck had been badly neglected by the previous owner and in need of repair. It blew black smoke that went away after changing the fuel filter and prefilter screen. The fuel filter came out coal black.
I found that I need to change the fuel filter every 6k miles because it comes out coal black by that point.
I noticed lately that my truck was blowing black smoke after shifting during acceleration. When it idles at a stop light I see white smoke roll by the passenger window. The black smoke reminded me of the smoke I saw before my first fuel filter change and it had been 6 k since the last time I changed it so I replaced the fuel filter. It came out black like the others had.
The difference this time is the black smoke during acceleration is still there.
Are these symptoms pointing toward slipped timing? I remember reading about symptoms like this indicating that the timing has slipped. Please let me know what you think it could be or if you need more info to diagnose this problem.
TIA,
Bob
