pinched vaccum hose
Recently my brakes did not seem to be stopping the truck like they used to so I started to look around. I noticed that the vaccum hose on the brake booster was pinching shut when I stepped on the brake. I replaced the hose to see if that would fix my problem. Not sure if anyone else has had this happen but I thought I would ask.

When I bought my truck, I noticed that the brake vaccum line was swollen by the vaccum pump.
I removed the line for inspection and found that the line had been oil soaked.
It was an easy fix, at that time. I simply cut off the oil soaked end of the vaccum line and placed it back on the vaccum pump.
I have since learned that a seal in these vaccum pumps can go out allowing oil to be sucked up the brake booster line.

The oil softens the rubber line and all this may be causing your brake vaccum line to suck shut.

Rich.

Re:pinched vaccum hose
There was a recall to add a check valve at the vacuum pump to keep oil from getting into the vacuum line and causing the exact problems described. My 96 was already done when I got it in 99 so the recall has been out there awhile. Check around for recalls - call the dealer and give them your VIN to check against any recall actions - they are supposed to keep track of recall work done.
