overdrive solenoid test

Use a multi meter , check form both ends , check to see that the sw is working by connecting meter to the harness going to sw , near trans .
Use the meter to do a resistance check on the plug going into trans , should have some resistance , I do not know what the spec is .
But the only way to check for sure is with a set of gauges to watch the pressure's , the solenoid could be working but there could be something in the valve/seat that does not let it seal .
After that you could have bigger problems .

I am having an overdrive problem right now too. I think the overdrive solenoid is either clogged or stuck, or the spool valve the solenoid controlls is stuck. I already removed the valvebody, and disassembled it and cleaned it. it was nasty. My friend has been driving the truck for some time now, and he called me last week. it was shifting funny. I drove up to where he was, and there was a smal hole rubbed in the cooling line as it goes next to the engine. the fluid was almost all leaked out. I fixed the leaking line, filled the trans back up, and it drove fine for a few days. Two days ago, he called me and said he didn't have overdrive. The level was still fine, so I had him drive down to my house, and I dropped the pan, and valvebody. The pan had about twice the metal material stuck to it as you would expect with a normal trans oil change. the filter was also fairly clogged. I disassembled the VB cleaned it, and put a new filter in it. I did find that the pressure regulator valve was stuck, and after I cleaned it, it was fine. I put it together, and now I don't have overdrive, but all of the other shifting probs are gone. what do you guys think? what is the wire from the OD solenoid to the pcm?

Like said above check resistance on the wires going to the od sol. how is the switch hooked up. is it controling the ground side i take it...... If its controling the ground side how did you check it...just wondering if it was done right. also be sure if you do any resistance checks make sure you cross the leads to see how much resistance is in the meter as if theres alot in the meter then you'll think you have a bad sol. but its actually good.

Can't remember for sure but i think its across the middle pin and the back pin. Now that i think of it the biggest problem with that is that both the od ad the lock up share the same power feed so the resistance might be alittle higher, other than that you can check resistance across middle and the back pin write down the resistance and then across the middle and the front and write that down for comparasons because the 2 sol should have the same resistance. if your lock up is working fine.

The lock up is working fine, in 3rd gear just no OD How hard is it to replace
OD solenoid??? and also since I have OD switched there should not be anything keeping it from working, like tps,or pressure switch..... right????

there shouldn't be anything no. Other than if you blew a seal out of the od piston and it can't build any pressure to engage the od. It shouldn't be hard to replace. Drop the valve body and you'll see a sol. pack and you take 3 T25 (i think thats the size) bolts out and put a new gasket on and replace. i'd make sure the switch is grounded good. and everything.
