Question Oil temp gauge

My pop has a '97 and has been talking for quite some time about putting an oil temperature gauge in. His questions are as follows:

1. Electrical or mechanical?
2. Where to put put the sender or connect the hose that goes to the gauge?

If anyone has done this, I'd appreciate some input for him.

Thanks.

Mine is electrical.....I plumbed the sensor into the port on top of the oil filter housing, right next to the turbo oil feed line.

Unless you are working the truck really hard, oil temp will be within 15 degrees of water temp. It's really gonna be a boring gauge. The oil filter mounts on the oil cooler.

If it is at all possible, his truck is worked less than mine is. I'm not sure exactly why he wants an oil temperature gauge, but I'm going to pass along the info to him just so he'll know he can do it.

Thanks for the information, men. I appreciate it.
