Question Oil Pressure Dropping to 0 on 98 12V

Quick question here..
On my 98 12V, it seems nearly every other time I come to a stop I get a ding from my dash along with "check gauges" and the oil pressure is pointing at zero.

Dealer is very helpful and said to install an oil pressure gauge to see if its REALLY dropping to zero and if its not, there is a TSB on a computer issue.. Needs to be reflashed.

I highly doubt that it is getting "0" oil pressure as its done it for 30 seconds at a time and the engine sounds fine.

Any opinions?

Thanks!

Replace the sender after checking that it's connector is clean.
Sender is a little to the rear of the power steering tank.

Its common for the sendor to fail. It can also be partly attributed to the use of the wrong oil filter. (like a fram) You can put a mech oil pressure gauge on, using the plug on top of the oil filter housing. Its probably not real. The tsb is NOT the right way to fix it. They reflash it to never show low oil pressure......atleast they are confident its not the moter. But if you do that its exactly the same as taking the guage out.

Yep, sounds like a bad oil pressure sender, someone else had this happen with theirs;

When at idle, cold and on an incline the oil gauge will go to 0 but then come back after a second or so.

Aside from what the others have said it can also be due to low idle. Mine does it sometimes when the air is on. But it is a pain when they guage goes to 0 instead of a lower reading.

I got a new sensor and will install it when I feel like getting all greasy..

Thanks for the help and guiding me away from the reflash!

If you get greasy replacing the sending unit that may point to a failure. They can leak a lot of oil when going bad.

My first replacement lasted 3 weeks. Luckily, the dealer noted all electrical parts have 30 day warranty and replaced it free. 2nd unit is over a year old and still fine.

BTW, most sending unit sockets are under $10 at local auto parts store. They are worth every dollar.

Fueling around: Thats good to know.. I didn't realize that..

I need to find the exact sensor.. looks like its going to be a pain to get to..
Is it easier from the top or the bottom?

BTW truck is greasy mainly because I think I have a front seal seeping a bit and I also had a trans cooler line that rubbed through a bit.. Got the trans line fixed and will fix the front seal when I do the KDP.
When I do that, I'm afraid my axle will rust though

On mine, it was the sender as well. I replaced it once, lasted a couple weeks like Fueling around. When I started having the same problem again, I thought something else was wrong. Went from synthetic oil to petroleum, added some lucas, went to a fleetguard filter, etc.........anyway, nothing made it quit happening. I finally bought another sensor and changed it when I got ticked off in heavy slow traffic because everytime I would stop that dang "ding ding" would happen. I think I barely got my hands dirty.....I needed to use an extension so I could turn the ratchet.......so I think that helped.

Waylan, did you access it from the top or the bottom?

I did mine from the bottom.
I don't think it took 2 minutes with the socket. Over 1/2 hour without which includes 15 minutes of walking around and complaining about not having a socket......

Just to resurrect this, I am updating.. I JUST NOW tackled this project.. I ended up snapping the old sender off right by the socket connection.. I couldn't get the wires off..
Got the new one in.. I'll let you guys know how it works
