Question Oil Pressure

Hi all. It's been a while since I've been in here, but I have a question for all you 12V people.

On cold starts or after my truck has been sitting for a while, it takes a second or two before oil pressure starts to register on the pressure gauge. It takes even longer on cold winter mornings. What I want to know is, is this normal?

I was talking with my cousin that used to have a Dodge Cummins and he said his oil pressure registered right away. My truck has done this ever since I bought it, and I thought it was just the way Cummins operated, but now I'm beginning to wonder if something is wrong with a check valve or something like that.

What happens on your Dodges??

Thanks.

It just takes aminute for the computer to relay the pressure to the gauges......

Cummins says to shut it down if there is no oil pressure after 15 seconds.

Longest 15 seconds of your life, too.

Nut;
Very normal for the oil to take 5-10 seconds to register. Just keep your RPM down until a good solid 10 seconds of oil pressure.

Wait until the sending unit goes out and you have no oil pressure reading while zipping down the freeway. Very unnerving.

I doubt the lag is in relaying the info to the computer, my MB has a mechanical gauge in the dash and when it is real cold out even the M1 synthetic 15w40 takes a few seconds to get good pressure. What I found amusing is that if I don't start the car after getting pressure it takes a good 15-20 seconds for it to bleed off again!

I can't stand waiting that long without pressure, after changing the oil in something I'll turn it on and shut it back off just so the oil pump is primed. It bothers me to see it at 0psi for the first 5 or so seconds on some vehicles.

I have counted to 20 before oil psi this is like at -40f 0-40 vegie oil does help but still takes its time, have dodge gauge and mech gauge both just sit at 0 when cold I think a pan heater would help this the kind you apoxy to the pan.

What do you mean vegie oil helps? Perhaps you had something else on your mind when you wrote this? Vegetable oil has a horrible pour point relative to a synthetic 0w40 oil. http://www.journeytoforever.org/biod...tml#fuelesters

your oil pressure gauge takes awhile to read the oil pressure. as we all know that the dodge gauge isn't a true reflection of your oil pressure any way. as soon as you start your truck you have immediate oil pressure whether the gauge reads it or not. don't let the gauge scare you.

Thats whats nice about a remote starter. The truck has cycled, started, and the oil has been circulating nicely for 5 mins before I get in the truck. Pretty SWEET!

At least you think the oil pressure has come up. Can't really be sure unless you're looking at the gauge right?
I also have a remote starter but rarely use it when then temps are below zero, prefer to see for myself that everything is ok.

How does the remote starter know when the wait to start light turns off and it's time to start?

Is this an aftermarket remote starter or OEM?

Some remote starters have wait to start function built in that waits till the light goes off, others just an adjustable time that the remote waits in-between key on and start. Since my truck is usually plugged in or it's warm out the grids don't usually cycle, I have the wait to start feature disabled.
To my knowledge there are no OEM remote starters.

Tell me about it!!!
That seems like the longest 10 seconds of your life

-30 and start the beast up with no oil P. Feel like I'm sweating bullets. Always seems as though I'm almost ready to shut it down when the gauge finally starts to read.

When it's below 0, my truck takes about 15 sec. Scary as hell waiting for it though!
