Oil pan ?

Has anyone else had thier oil pan rust through? Mine has and it's leaking now. Also can you change the oil pan with the motor in the truck?

I believe you might have to pull it. I am not sure how low the oil pickup is situated in the rear of the pan. Might get away with a lift of 4-5", not sure.

I did mine a few years ago. Pan $75 gasket $25.

Lifting the motor, priceless.

Amen to that. We used a bottle jack and supported it up for height

You can do it in the truck but do have to lift the motor up. When I took my pan off to put in a oil drain I just used a engine hoist on the front motor lifting point.

Thanks for the replys. I thought it looked like I could get it out if I lift the motor, but I wasn't sure.

You'll see that just lifting it a little will allow you to squeeze it out. The only thing is, you have slide it back in order to unbolt the pickup tube before it will come off.

If I were you, I would drain the oil hot, and leave it with the plug out and a drain pan under it for as long as possible, even a day or two. Otherwise you will have oil dripping all over you while you are trying to get the pickup tube off.

Did any of you have to pull the tranny or at least the cross member to do this? Mine's going to need changing this summer. The FSM says to remove the engine and thus doesn't elaborate.

I have a 4x4 24v, but the 12v should be similar.

1. drain oil
2. Remove fan shroud
3. remove hood(optional, I used a over head lift to lift motor)
4. Loose both motor mount bolts until the nut is almost off(no need to take the nut off) On the drives side you can stick a wrench on the head side of the bolt(near the starter) and us a deep socket and a u joint to get to the nut from the under side. pound each bolt to the center of the mounts so the clear the edge of the motor mount cups on the frame.
5. lift motor 6 inches or so.
6. remove all the 10mm pan bolt and studs
7. pull the pan down some and remove the pick up tube(two 10mm bolts on passengers side front IIRC)
8. Pull pan out

Reassemble in reverse, tighten pan bolts to 18ft.
