Oil Blow-by

Oil Blow-by
I took my '96 in for some warranty work(less than 100K) and asked the dealer to check to see of the rear main seal was leaking, because I noticed a puddle of oil would accumulate on the ground,at the location where the trans(auto)bolts to the engine. When I went to pick my rig up, the svc. mgr. said the oil puddle was due to "the blow-by tube dripping".
Can this be? The puddle seem's to be getting bigger.

Is it possible to "tie-in" the blow-by tube to the exhaust
behind the muffler, to eliminate this problem? Or would that cause too much vacum on the crankcase?
Just seem's to me that someone would have come up with a 'fix' for this problem by now.

Re:Oil Blow-by
It's really not that big a deal - I lengthened the down-tube enough on mine to reach the front swaybar, and used a bicycle type water bottle and holder as the new catch bottle (it attaches to the swaybar as it would a bicycle frame), after drilling vent holes in it and cutting out the top for the extended down tube - I took a couple of old worn out socks to use as an external cover/filter over the outside of the bottle, The socks absorb all excess oil vapors, and last from one oil change to another, while still providing proper ventilation... It's high enough to not be seen, and well out of any water splashes in wet weather... The socks are easy to change, and it's sorta neat to find a good use for them...

Well thank's Gary, for the neat idea. Sound's like a simple fix to an annoying problem. I'll certainly look into trying this, if someone else doesn't top this good idea.

Listen (read) Gary's reply. The bottle is thee way to go. Dump it out at every oil change and you will never see a mark on your driveway. It gets about 1/2 oz. (max) between changes. I used a 4 oz. bottle. I did not need to extend the tube.

Get a bottle, use a Unibit to drill the cap till it slides on the tube, drill a hole through the tube and place a cotter pin through the tube. The cap is now secure. Drill a few vent holes on the upper part of the bottle, screw it on the cap and enjoy a clean driveway.

Michael

Re:Oil Blow-by
Check your vacuum pump, if the seals are bad they can add to your blowby and cause oil leakage. This came from Cummins and was a problem with mine. Also check for vacuum leaks which will also add to it. The pump exhaust is to the crankcase, you can figure from there.
