NV4500 venting

Well a few weeks ago, my NV4500 5th gear decided to do its own thing. Fine, whatever. Well I am finially getting around to getting it fixed. I do not have the know how or the tools to fix the thing. So I take it to a couple of local shops. Only one shop knew about the updated main-shaft. Good so far. Well then I got a quote of about $3000. Geez, I can't afford that. So I will just put in the higher gears or something. Who knows. I just needed to vent.

Ok, I just got a reman from Standard Transmission and a new south bend clutch. Can't wait to get it in. Anyone in the Hampton Roads area got a place that they can help put it in. Or recommend a shop to do the work. I dont trust the shops around here.

well, you shouldn't have to worry about it now, but tack welding the 5th gear nut works pretty good. I've got buddies who pull 3 car wedges w/ 5sp trucks... they always lose 5th gear, but once they have it fixed and welded, they don't have any more problems.

costs ~$300 to fix.

Well I think anything over $2k is a ripoff for the updated shaft, but myself I like money to much I'd go the route Forrest Nearing suggested unless something is messed up. In that case it is probably better to get a remanufactured tranny then.

Sorry, no help on finding you a shop.

Ok, do you have a driveway? or better a garage? Basic hand tools? a small amount of mechanical knowledge?

Go out and buy the service manual, rent a tranny jack for the weekend and have at it.

Sometimes its harder to think about it, than to do it. Use plent of common sence and double check everything.

I would bet most of the guys here learned more by doing things than anyone has ever tought them. I know I am that way. Learned more from greasy hands and service manuals.

For what it's worth, If you were closer, I'd tell ya to bring it here, plenty of room and all the tools.

I wish I had a driveway and a grarage. But I am stuck in an apartment. Thats why I am having a take the risk of letting a shop that I know nothing about touch my truck. I am putting if off as long as possiable before I let someone else touch me truck. Norfolk, Virgina suck. Nobody around here knows anything about diesel. On top of that, the won't touch my truck, stating "we dont have big enough tools". yeah I heard that from one shop. I tried to get it allinged at one shop, it wouln't fit on the lift. My truck is not even big, its just a 4x4 club cab extended bed with a little 2" lift up front. The dealer is out of the question for everything. I am only 19, so I really can't afford them. I did have to get a badgeing on the side of the truck, the RAM2500 embelm, someone took it off, it was $46.00 for one. It doesn't even include the cummins part. You all know how expenive the dealer is. But I get to drive down to Virigna Beach and pick up my new transmission tommorow. I have duty today on my ship. So I am stuck here. More good news my new clutch arrived at home today. I know this post is nothing but, I am sorry feelas. I hope with this new transmission and everything done, my truck will have all its major problems taken care off. And be ready for a long life of service and bombing with me.

too bad you're not closer. i highly recommend scott at mass diesel (www.massdiesel.com), but he's located in mid-eastern mass if you could get up there. there's also ted jannetty (www.jannettyracing.com) in connecticut. i don't know of anyone closer.

the driveway is an option, just WORK SAFE! use jackstands (if need be), transmission jack, etc. you could put a tarp on the ground, drive or push the truck over it so you don't spill any fluids or debris on the ground.

just like the gsk, it's only intimidating, but not a big deal...just a lot of work.

Norfolk is a big base and should have an auto hobby shop. Not to mention most of the tools along with someone that can advise you. You only pay a couple a bucks an hour for a lift of a few bucks a day for a stall. Try checking the bases MWR branch for more info on it.

My buddy told me about the hobby shop on the Norfolk base. I asked if he wanted to help. He didn't seem to intrested. Neither of us can do that sorta thing. I have the Haynes manual. So I should be ok. The clutch is the only thing I have never done. So I am walking in the dark. I have a week long cruise I have to go one. I am on the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON. We are the surge carier. So it could be December before I get this fixed. My truck seems to be doing fine. I had some problems with Standard Transmission. They sent my the wrong tranny. 2wd instead of a 4wd. So I am getting that new one tommorow. Someday. Short on money after a reman tranny, and a new South Bend clutch. That hurt the wallet for an airman.
