NV4500 rebuild
Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone has taken there NV4500 in to get rebuilt. All im looking for is an estimate in how much it costs to get one rebuilt. The problem with mine is that the synco's are out in 2nd and 5th gear wines. I will take it out of truck and everything, so the labor cost shouldn't be too high. If someone has taken theres in to get rebuilt, what did they get done and how much did it cost? -Thanks-

there are places on ebay that'll do around $1000 exchange plus shipping...
Standardtransmission.com gets like $1450 exchange plus shipping..
I have seen some dealers sell them for just under $3000... I think that's remanufactured, new is more like $4500..

Best bet is to take it to a transmission shop and get an estimate..... It is usually cheaper to just replace and repair what is needed. Exchange units are priced on the old unit being a catastrophe... They have to keep the margin high to protect the rebuilders incase your core is junk. If yours is working and drivable it is likely substantially less to repair the one you have.

I'd agree with this statement, Standardtransmission states that if they rebuild yours rather than exchange, they'll usually charge less, depending on what's wrong with it...
they have to price to the high side for the ones that have been run low on lube
I bought a used transmission with bad syncro in 3rd gear- going to rebuild that myself, and then swap... I'll always have a spare... he paid about $3k for a reman from Dodge dealer in Denver... I'll pay ALOT less.... looks like seals, and $19 for a 3rd gear sycnro, plus $170 in special tools..

Well, I have never had a manual transmission apart, but i was wondering what it would take to rebuild it myself? I have plenty of mechanical experience, (building numerous engines, stock and performance). Only thing I wouldnt know is.....what tools to get. Maybe a list.... -Thanks-

it is really pretty simple to rebuild them. just be carful when you take them apart. new syrcros and bearing can be bought under 200 bucks. i would suggest a fully splined main shaft while you were doing the rebuild just to make it bulllit proof.

here's a comprehensive list of the tools:
http://www.quad4x4.com/NV4500%20Tools.htm
their "Torque King" mainshaft (which I think is pricey, and overkill for 95% of applications out there).. is here:
http://www.quad4x4.com/NV4500%205th%...0Solutions.htm
I think the fully splined shaft that Standardtransmission.com has will be good enough for me, the factory improved nut is currently holding...
if your 5th gear is whining, it could be coming loose, or the mainshaft could be worn..
good pictures of the different mainshafts there.. they also sell rebuild kits with tools & videos... they even have a rebuild manual PDF available for download...
I already have some the tools there, with the exception of the ones that are specific to the NV4500... I was going to get QT2056 & QT2002 (they have each tool in 1/2" and 3/4" drive, I could also use QT2000 instead of QT2056)
there are a bunch of other specific tools for replacing bearings- but my trans doesn't need bearings at this time... their prices on tools seem to be reasonable, when compared with SPX Miller prices...
If you want to go this route, PM me, maybe we can work out a deal with the tools... I have 2 transmissions I need to go thru, but the tools will cost more than the parts I need for the first one...
also, both quad4x4.com and standardtransmission.com have the fluid for $54/gal, instead of $20+ per quart some dealers charge...
