In the post below I had mentioned I had a pretty good tranny noise in 2nd and 3rd gear and a mild rumble in 5th. I found out the problem and wanted to share.
Something I noticed a while ago, I had a lot of "driveline slack" that I dismissed and now almost wish I hadn't.
The slack was actually the countershaft(lower shaft) in the transmission moving forward and aft by about .278". The rear countershaft bearing was gone, pictures to follow when I find my card reader.
Besides that the only other thing wrong in the whole trans was a scratchy throw out bearing. So a reaseal and new bearings is all I really need.
Now for the big question......
I was really hoping to find that after 165,000 miles, my clutch would need replacing, but, in fact it still looks like it and the pressure plate are in great shape
Does anyone have a stock replacement or better yet, a SBC Con O clutch laying around that you could measure the thickness? If there was a decent difference in thickness I could better justify buying a new clutch, but if not, I may opt for some other repairs/upgrades instead.
I will try to update this and add some pictures as I go. Anyone wanting pics of the transmission and it's innards please feel free to PM me and I can e-mail them to you.
I love pics, great reference
