nv4500

I will swap from a getrag 360 to a nv4500 soon, where can I get them cheaper? I know, anywhere they sell them but where would be a good place to start looking? Jyards don't have dodges here much less diesel ones.

Where can I get the 5th gear fix?
What is a good price to pay for a used one in good condition?
Have anyone here rebuild one of this trannys? How does is compare to rebuilding a getrag in simplicity?

Thank You.

$6000 for a conversion kit? a discontinued conversion kit? Well I can beat that no problem.

I read about the AA adapter so I can re use the stock clutch components including the clutch and pressure plate, etc.

What about the other questions, where can I get the 5th gear nut fix? Do You guys have a how to do it thread here?

Thank You.

Same guys at quad4x4 have the permanent fix for the 5th gear. www.torqueking.com Since I had my transmission out for a bad seal I noticed that the guy who rebuilt the thing less than a year ago threw the 5th gear back on to a clearly worn shaft. I opted to permanently fix the thing with the torqueking SI kit, figured it was worth the investment and being a poor college student it took alot of guts to fork over that money let me tell you lol. If the stock shaft you have is in acceptable condition then you could probably get away with their retrofit kit.... but it seems rather expensive considering for a couple hundred more you could have a brand new shaft.

Call them up and ask for Dan... if hes not available at the precise moment just tell them to have him call you back, hes the guy to talk to. I spoke with him several times throughout my project and he was extremely helpful and knowledgeable... though he did not come across as an overly friendly guy at first, he is just a very matter-of-fact kind of person. He did not try and pitch is products too much but he doesnt really need to, he has done a good job of monopolizing these transmissions haha.

I dont know how much gear box experience you have but I had absolutely none. I had never had a manual opened up in front of me before. With a simple manual I had the thing 100% ripped apart and installed the shaft myself... what motivated me you ask?... Price quotes from shops and the fact that none of them sounded like they knew anything. Key is to just take your time and follow instructions from those who know, to a tee! I guess I put everything back together right because its still runnin lol.

By the way I believe they guarantee 5th nut failure prevention for the life of the transmission with the torqueking stuff.

I was referring to the 5th gear fix, if you don't use the quad4x4 fix plan on doing it again.

Lots of places to buy rebuilt 4500s, average price is about $1200, try http://www.standardtransmission.com/

Thank You, I see they are good but of course anything good also cost good money. I will provably buy a good running tranny or a rebuilt one and do the 5th gear fix on it. I use the truck for work so as long as it is very reliable that is enough for Me.

What other places to get the 5th gear fix? What do and what NOt to do?

Anyone have the rebuild instruction manual?

Thank You.

The other fixes are just nut fixes and not shaft fixes. The manual I have is from quad4x4, 20 bucks for a downloadable pdf. I am not trying to plug this company at all as they took ALOT of my money... but I did my research and they seem to be the ones who do it best.

If you can wait a few months I'll be selling mine along with the SBC clutch and PP. I think the $1200 Infidel quoted is an exchange price. I'm going to do a 6 speed conversion when the hot weather breaks, so the 4500 with it's upgraded 5th gear and shaft will be for sale.

PP = Pressure Plate, what clamps the Clutch Disk to the Flywheel.

STAY AWAY from Blumenthal transmission. I bought their top of the line rebuilt NV4500 and it lasted 8 months, which 4 of them the truck just sat. It sheared 3rd gear out.

I then ordered a rebuilt unit from standard gear and trans, because Infidel recommended them. I didnt have any problems with their unit.
When I sent standard my Blumenthal core, they told me the parts Blumenthal use were not genuine New Venture parts.

I have since done a manual to Goerend full billet 47rh conversion. I will personally NEVER have another manual behind a Cummins. They cannot hold the extra power I am running, they shift SLOW, and when you go to a dual disc clutch the synchros and 3rd gear get beat to death.

Seems like a lot of folks are finally realizing that the autos hold the Cummins power better than the manuals.

You know... I agree it makes driving a lot easier. I have to work in DC a lot of times and I could not stand driving a stick in that kind of traffic every day but this truck pulls heavy trailers almost every times and I need something that will stay cooler + I don't want to change it over an auto.

Do You guys think the nv4500 is a good enough tranny for towing? is it worth the swap from a getrag? I shift a zf-5 for a long time and it is excellent and I mean fast to shift, will the nv4500 be as fast with out any grinding like a getrag?

Thank You.
