NV 4500 shift tower swap
I am interested in doing the shift tower swap for my 96 5 speed. I want to be able to use the BD short shifter. Could somebody tell me exactly what parts I need. I read on some old posts that I need the shift tower and the shifter??? I don't exactly understand what "shifter" is refering to. I thought that the BD kit would include that. Please help me figure this out.

the '98+ shift tower has different mounting of the shifter. This later style is what is required to mount the BD kit. Additionally, you will need the original '98+ shifter because the ball portion of the shifter is removed and re-installed on the new BD unit. It is attached via a roll pin and slides into the socket on the bottom of the lever. It has two O rings on it....NV's idea was to elliminate vibration transfer between the trans and shifter by isolating these two pieces with O rings.
Additionally, I believe there is a difference in the fork pads between the two styles, and the later pads will be required. They slip onto the shift forks and cushion them from the cluster rings. When I did my auto/manual conversion, I ordered my trans as a 98 so all of these components were already installed...except the BD short shift that is, I did that myself.
Hope it helps...good luck. Ypou will like the short shifter, my gates are short and narrow....makes the old 5'er fun to row. It does reduce the leverage you have against the gears though, so you might feel that...might not. Mine is still too new to have become super smooth yet.
