Noise comming from Tranny or Transfer case

I have a strange noise coming from the tranny or xfer case when pulling. It started underlight load going up a hill and happened everyonce in a while. Then it quit under light load and started happening when in gear going down hill under no load. It happened once under heavy load and caused the whole truck to jump. It sounds like the chain in the xfer case is jumping teeth. Has anyone heard this before and does anyone know how to check the chain strech on the xfer case.

Yep it sounds like you have broke the snap ring in the back of the transfer case. You will probably need one of these http://www.drivetrain.com/gillies/Tcasesaver.htmland possibly some other parts.

It would be nice if that is all it is. I know which one you are talking about my local dealer use to keep quite a few of them on the shelf that was before they went under.

I found it the oil feed tube for the oil pump fell off and was disengrated. In the middle where it is held together by a rubber hose the rubber hose split letting the oil pickup fall off. We checked all the bearings and gears and only found one spot where it started to get a little hot but that is all. Now I have to order the parts and put it all back together. Its a good thing I found it now and not 10k miles later with a burned up transfer casr. The imfamous snap-ring was still in place so that is a good thing.

When my snap ring let go it took out everything but the cases. If you have it apart you should consider putting in the snap ring up grade.
