Is no oil pressure normal at start up for 3 seconds??
I just purcahsed my 98diesel dodge and I changed the oil the second day I had it.And I never noticed if this happened before or not, maybe it seems normal but here it goes. I turn the key on and wait for the "wait to start" light to go out, then I crank and the truck starts fine, Then for a full 3 count the "check gauges" light is on and it does not read any oil pressure then it jumps up to 40 lbs or so and seems to go up with raised rpm. Maybe this is a function of the electronics? I know the ABS light takes a couple of seconds to go out, Like I said I havent driven the truck much and the first day it was in the daytime so I might not have noticed this, and I changed the oil on the second day and it was night time when i drove it away and that red light caught my attention. I used RotellaT and I of course checked the oil level several times and it was always fine. Thanks in advance for any input

My 1994 did that, and my 1997 does the same thing, always worried me, but thats the way they are. Takes 2-3 sec.
It's my pot and I'll stir it if I want to. If you're not careful, I'll stir your's as well!

This is normal for many engines, not just the Cummins.

Engines that are reasonably built like the cummins have the sensor placed far away from the pump in the oil stream. This way the gauge will tell you that you have oil pressure everywhere, not just before the blocked passage. And the late reading of pressure on the gauge keeps people from revving the unlubed cold engine a bit.

Just my2c

AlpineRAM

What AlpineRam said.
I always start my truck in Neutral and ALWAYS wait for at least 1 minute before putting the truck in gear, at least 3 minutes in the winter time. It gives the internal engine parts a chance to get lubricated before putting a load on those parts and gives the tranny time to get the oil circulating - won't circulate in park.
Side note. I NEVER exceed 2000 RPM until the water temp gauge begins to move. Again, I just like to know everything is getting well lubed. Hoping to get in excess of 500k out of the engine.
This info wasn't asked for but I'm not charging for it either.
