I'd buy a shift kit from TransGo or a whole VB if you can afford it. The TG Shift Kit was 80 bucks for me, and I don't plan on having the trans that long, but it definitely made a huge improvement, especially since I had a drainback issue. I would also adjust your trans bands, even if you leave it stock, its quick and easy, and can make a big difference in how the truck runs.

Are you sure the valve covers are leaking? On my '95 the valve covers were leaking BUT also my injectors were not sealing properly and they were leaking diesel. I had to remove the injectors, replace the copper washers and reinstall and torque the. Not a real bad project as long as the injector nuts are not siezed.
