New Member with a Plan!
Hello. I'm new to Diesel engines, and to the site.
I've been reading and learning a lot. So thanks already!
I will be using the truck for plowing and hauling a trailer with landscaping equipment up to skid steers. I will be hauling from the rear, not a 5th.
As far as I know the truck is stock with 130,000mi. Here is my plan to get it in shape and get some more hp and torque out of the power plant.
1. 48.00 TST dowel pin kit (plus gasket and baring wrench)
2. 190.00 #8 Cam plate kit for 230 hp and 605 torque
3. 35.00 AFC Spring Kit
4. 128.50 4000 gsk
5. 25.00 TST Boost Control Elbow
what do you think?
I would love to have some more power. This seems like some of the common reccomendations that are made here. what problems are these mods going to cause. It there anything else that should be on the list?
Are these mods pretty easy? I read the directions on the dowel pin kit. Seems straght forward. How about the cam plate kit? the afc srpings the gsk the boost. I'm not much of a wrencher, bu I can hold my own.
Is there anything that should be done in groups for ease, or for performance, is this a weekends worth of work?
thanks guys.

Welcome to DTR Paul.
Before 18 other people ask you...fill in your signature with your truck information so that everyone can help you. We need to know what you have to be able to offer answers.
Go to the top left of the page, look for "User CP", click that then pick "Edit Signature".

Before you start doing the mods, you will need gauges. Start saving some more $, because your transmission will not be happy with the increased power. You will need valve springs with the 4000GSK, but stock springs will work with the 3000GSK.

All these mods are pretty easy. If you don't want to buy the #8 plate, you can grind your own 10 or 100 plate, for free using your stock plate. I did buy the plate for my 96 because I wanted to keep the stock plate in case I ever sell the truck.
Some people will tell you that you don't need the AFC spring kit, and you may not if you don't care that much about smoke, but I have it on mine, because it lets you fine tune the smoke a little better.
The TST instructions for the GSK will tell you to go in from the top cam plate hole, however, I've done both and I think its easier to go from the hole on the side. Here are directions for that:
http://www.piersdiesel.com/TechGSK12V.htm
Also you may hear that you don't need to buy the GSK, that you can add your own washer for free. You can add the washer, and you'll get these same effect, but I've seen several people that have problems with this, as for me, I'd rather spend the money and not have any problems.
Fore the KDP kit, I added the Cummins timing cover gasket, the kit comes with silicone, which leaked in my case.
Here is another recommendation, while you have the timing cover off, adjust the timing as well. It is supper easy to do when the timing cover is off, but you can always do it at a later time. The timing kit tools will run you a few hundred dollars.
Good luck.
And yes, like Baja said, get gauges first. The only thing I would do now is the KDP.

Yeah...your looking to do about the same as I am... But I already have guages. You're gonna need to beef up that transmission too, if its an auto...If you're running an NV4500, all you need is a clutch. Good luck, and let me know what you think.

I'm trying to decide when to do the tranny
It is hard to justify the upgrade to a tranny that isn't trashed.
I just had one rebuilt for another truck last week, so I'm thinking I will wait until this one starts to slip, then do the tranny, then do the power upgrades.
I spoke with my local ATS dealer this morning. Pleasant conversation, and definitely a good option when the time comes. sounds like customer service is top notch.
I guess I don't see much sense in doing the power mods if I'm just going to spin the tranny. Although, I suppose that would meant that I would get to the new tranny faster!!
