New CTD owner here
Hey....

I am a proud new owner of a 98 12-valver. She is in beautiful condition and already had what is listed below put on. Anything I should be wary of for this particular year-model? I plan on making some good power out of it(you can never have too much 8)) and wondered if ya'll had any advice to get me started.

I am pretty knowledgeable as far as the engines go...I have several friends with the CTD. Just wanted to get some advice from those who have "been there, done that"? Warnings, do's and don'ts, etc?

Thanks ya'll.

Welcome to the site WSmalley! You are going to love your 12 valver! best moter made by cummins hands down no if's ands or butts or arguments or....... Looks warily around for those sneaky 24 valve guys that could be about ;D.

All kidding aside they are really a nice engine and get better fuel mileage too
First thing to do is get a transmission gauge hooked up to that hot line coming out of the Transmission. You really need to keep an eye on that, it is the weak link in these trucks unless you have full mods on your tranny. The valve body is a good start.
Once you get the tranny beefed up enough to handle the torque the only limit to your mods will be how deep your pockets are.
We have an online store here and also some fantastic sponsors, any of them will be glad to offer advice or answer concerns on your modification's.
Browse the Faq section, lots of good stuff going in there all the time and feel free to join in anywhere on the discussions. No question is too silly or redundant here, we are all here to learn so speak up and again Welcome to the site!
Welcome!
My add on to what Top has stated is to be sure the gear case alignment dowel pin is contained. It is referred to as "kdp" or killer dowel pin. Do a site search for more info on the subject. The fall out rate is low,but is about $1200-3000 for repairs if unlucky. Suggest you try and contact previous owner/owners to see if a pin fix has been done. Feel free to contact me if you have more questions after doing the search.
You also need an egt (exhaust gas temp) gauge with the ground fuel plate and 3k gov. kit. This is another area to research if you need an understanding of acceptable safe operating temps.

Here is a site that have info. on the KDP. http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/Dowel_Pin/tab.htm

Before you start bombing your truck I would add a set of guages. Boost, trans temp., and pyro for EGT. I would get a new air filter set up. Scotty Air system or AFE mega canoon. Then TST makes torque plates. Here is a link about the TST torque plates. http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/mor...ower_p7100.htm

Here is another link that has tons of info. for you. http://www.dodgeram.org/support_pgs/diesel_ix.htm

Hope all this is very helpful. Enjoy the new truck -Anthony

WSmalley:

Let me also welcome you to the website! This is
a great place to be!

The other members have already given you some very
good advice! As they already said, the gauges are
very important on these trucks especially if you are
planning to raise the H.P. significantly!

I would like to recommend the 370 Diamond B Marine
Injectors to you! I have them in my 96' and they made
a MAJOR difference in the power of the truck! You
can buy them now for less than $300.00 for a set of
six! When I purchased mine they were a little over
$500.00. At the time I installed mine, I was running
the #6 TST Cam Plate, so that should give you some
idea of where the fueling needs to be.

Take care and good luck!

-------
John_P

Re:New CTD owner here
Hey ya'll...thanks for the advice. The KDP has already been tabbed...a friend of mine who has a seriously bombed CTD showed me his performance guy in atlanta and he checked it top to bottom and tabbed it for me. I have been told what I have on there thus far is near the limit for my stock TC. So question...would cutting out the resonator and muffler give too much power? I don't think it would...just 10-20 HP, but I didn't want to start slipping since I am not going to be able to replace the converter till after Xmas. Any thoughts?
