Need help trouble shootin my tranny
I have a 96 4x4 ctd auto. I looked under the hood and it doesnt say if its a 46re or a 47re all it says is "STD 4sp auto - CHR". What its doin is slippin. Its been sittin for a while and I started it up this morning, warmed it up in neutral, made errands and noticed it was whinning a little. I stopped for about 10 minutes at a sale and when I took off I mashed the pedal a bit to get on the highway and the engine revved pretty good but the truck didnt move all that much. I backed out of it and the tranny caught up to the engine so I babied it home. It will shift if you ease into it but if you give it too much it slips. So after all this rambling I guess my question is: Is it the bands slipping or is it the transducer and I think theres a selonoid too? I'm not too knowledgeable about trannys, but I won't hesitate to tear into it if Im pointed in the right direction. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Nope fluid was good I checked it in neutral. I dunno about the filter. I can't get to town right now to get one. I got a feelin it's a bit more then that. I'm hoping a band adjustment will do it, but I dont wanna adjust them if I don't need to. I was hoping someone might recognize if those symptoms pertain to bands or transducer/seloniod?

If you have a grainger nearby, you can get liquid filled for $8 or so. You will need 200 for checking the accumulator port, and 300 if you plan to check reverse pressure. The trans takes a 1/8th pipe thread on the test ports. I use push lock fittings and about 5 foor of push lock hose to plumb it up to where I can read it while on a road test. Push lock fittings and hose is available at any hydraulic shop.

Well I went out this morning and took off in the truck and it hasnt slipped yet. It is still whining pretty bad. The fluid looks good and doesnt smell. I will be flushing and putting a new filter in tomorrow. I'm not sure if I will adjust the bands. I hear it's not good to do that unless you are sure that is the cause of the slippage and I'm not sure. Is there any measurement I can take to see if the bands are where they need to be feeler gauge or something? Thanks

I never thought changing a tranny filter could get so complicated. The filter Advance Auto gave me doesn't look anything like the one I just puled off the tranny. Now I have to put the old one back in top off the fluids and go back to town to look for the right one. Anyone have a good Napa part # for the 47RE filter? I aint goin back to Advance.

The 96 filter should be a flat all fiber filter, while the 98 up filter is metal/plastic. If you have trouble getting the right one, use an application for anything from 62-up Chrylser/Dodge 727,518, 47rh, 47re. All the early 727's in big block and some small block trucks and vans used the same filter and gasket you need for the 96 model. Hope this helps.

I went ahead and ordered a high dollar one from Napa. Should be in tomorrow. I didn't like the way the one from Advance fit up. It didnt seem to have the clearance that the other one does. Thanks.

Well I still have some whining in the tranny after filter and fluid replacement, but no slippage as of yet. When I get the gauges on what kind of pressures should I see and does that diagnose a particular failure in the transmission?
