Your truck has either a NP 241 HD or a NP 241 DHD......the build sheet tag on the underside of the hood will confirm which t-case you have.

there were 2 cases avaliable in your truck, the 241 ldl or 241 hdl. the easy way to tell them apart is the hd case has a pto cover on it. and a 1 piece tail housing. but i would recommend you crawl under your truck and read what is stamped on the t case tage to know for sure.

Was the Hd unit just an option? Is there really a big difference between the 2? I just noticed I have the standard duty transfer case.

Sorry I'll quit hijacking you're thred.

The difference and the GV unit.

I had the LD unit in my truck which is a very early 94.
I cracked the case on mine twice.
After extensive research and talking to an engineer from Spicer I found out that the HD unit has thicker case material.
Dodge was having issues with the case cracking when guys were using snow plows.
Mine cracked (I think) because when I put my 10K plus boat away I am using the front of the truck and doing lots of twisting turning to push it up hill and around some tight turns.
I bought an HD unit (with the pto cover) and have not had an issue since. It has been about three years now.
I have a Gear Vendor unit (love it) that fit the same with each transfer case. So, I don't think it makes a difference.
If I were to crack again I would put in the 271 which came in the next generation and has a much higher rating.
I think the LD unit has a rating of like 10K while the HD jumps to 12K. Something like that.
