Need help IDing a 12V engine
Little Bro has a 95 3500 5spd. (old ranch truck) with about 350k on it that runs far better than a 175hp engine should. My guess is the engines been changed, but can't say for sure. Just wondering if anyone could tie block casting numbers to a production year.
BTW, the CPL tag is missing on the timing case and the pump and injectors appear to be totally virgin, no sign of being opened or messed with. It runs more like a 215hp engine.
Thanks, RR

Is the CPL plate missing or just covered in grime?.......I have seen a few where a thin layer of grime perfectly coated the plate so that you would think it was missing - just a suggestion......so are you saying the factory break off screw is still in place on the AFC housing?......One other thing to consider is that TST does include a new factory style break off screw in their fuel plate kits, so it is possible to make the pump AFC housing appear untampered even though there is a non stock fuel plate inside. Also, check the boost elbow.......is it stock?.....could be a dead giveaway if is an adjustable one.
FWIW, I don't think the motor and all it's components can be identified by block casting #'s........casting #'s will merely identify the block.....I think you need a CPL # to identify the complete assembly.

CTD Nut, thanks for the response, yeah the plate's gone, unpainted aluminum where it used to be. I thought about the replacement breakoff screw, but I've removed and looked at a lot of these and I'd make sizeable bet that it's the original unmolested screw.
I hadn't thought about the boost elbow, I'll check that.
Thanks, RJR

Pull the cover off the Injection pump, and take the number off the OEM fuel plate. Then go over to www.dodgeram.org, pick up a list of CPL's for the Cummins engines and hop over to a Cummins Service Center and provide them with the CPL for the likely year and cross reference to the fuel plate part number. You may have to try three or so years before you get a hit, but it always works and the OEM fuel plates changed numbers with each CPL engine generation.
If by chance the engine is from a medium duty truck, and not from a Dodge, the part number will also allow Cummins to reference to which CPL generation it is from.
A Bosch Service Center can also tell you right from the plate number on which engine series that pump should have been installed.
