My 12 valve never warms up, is this ok?

That is EXACTLY what mine looked like. I wish someone could identify what the rubber is, because it has driven me nuts figuring out where it came from, I figured a freak when they built my engine, now you have one as well.....

Those early thermostats came with the rubber wrapped around them as an insulator. I have removed several that looked like that and I think they since discontinued putting the rubber on them.

Yes there is a nut on the back. It's hard to see it, but if you shine a light down there you should be able to find it.
Also, the belt will squeal if it gets any coolant on it. Rinsing it well with hot water helps somewhat, but it still may be noisy for a long time.

I see the back of the bolt but I dont have a nut in the garage that will fit. Is it a lock nut or is there a lock washer on it? Do you happen to know the size? My bolt doesnt seem to want to come out easily.
