Besides the condition of truck & how you drive , I think that the biggest single thing is gear ratio , 3:55 - better , 4:10 worse .
Then all els being the same , unloaded should be able to get 17mpgs min. & up to 21 , stock ,
A friend has got up to a little over 27 with lots of work including propane , I've ridden with him [ all hwy 70 + ] & did the math , came up with 24.7 , winter time in MN. so room for more mpgs .
But there are many variables for this game .

I just handcalculated mine @18.6mpg empty driving 3.55 gears driving mostly on open country roads running and a few trips to town. If I stay under 70ish I usualy get 19 to 20mpg. I cant complain to much.

Best I ever got with 5speed and 4.10s is 19, and that was driving below 50 mph like I had an egg on the pedal. Around town/mix I usually get around 15, towing or driving hard I get 12-13.5

every engine will be different, even if they have the same load and same setup. 2 identical 12v's doing the same job for the same amout of time in the same environment, in one day one will burn through 3/4 of a tank and the other can run for a day and a half until it used 3/4 of a tank

The worst I ever got was 16.8 when on a trip on I-10 which involved driving at 75. The best I ever got was 23 when I was caught in bumper to bumper traffic for 6 hours while trying to get away from Hurricane Rita back in 2004.

I average between 18.5 through 19.5 which involves city and highway driving. I'm not sure what my gears are but I believe my tach is at around 2250 when going 70.

Om my 96 auto, as adjusted for tire size different from stock, I average 18.5 - 20 miles per gallon depending on how soft my foot is. This is no load, not pulling. If I had to pick one number it would be 19 miles per gallon. I always hand calculate.
