Mpg Questions

Hey guys i have a 98 12 value i know there been posts before about the gas mileage. I have about 152,000 on it and the mpg so horrible. the best i have seen was 415 miles in one tank that averages about 13.8. Never better than that and the worst i had was 325 that averages out to about 10.8. I mostly drive in city about 40-50 miles a day. i drive to college which is about 20 mins away from my house. I bought this truck with about 120,000 miles on it. i never looked at the mpg in the beginning when i bought but for the past 2 months i have noticed that i am not getting much. I dont know the facts about the mpg about these 12 values but shouldnt it be much higher then this..

Your mileage is a little on the low side but for city driving is to be expected.
Face it, these trucks are heavy to get rolling and eat the fuel till up to speed.
I'll bet if you clock your mpgs out on the highway they would be much better.

yeah I loved the sound after the cat and muff was removed the rattle is loud anyways and at idle it isn't bad you can always add a muff or leave the stock if you think noise is a prob.

Read through my thread...

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...threadid=36516

At the end you can see a link to my web site with the considerable improvements I have seen with my own fuel mileage...

Good luck

i don't understand about these mpg post. I have a 97 4x4 auto and it always gets 19 to 21 mpg running empty. I drive 23 miles to work and its been the same always. The truck is stock and all I do is service it. On long trips to beach or mountains the mileage remains the same. Wouldn't take nothing for it. It has 130k on it now

My '95 4X4 with an auto is essentially bone stock and I get about 22 1/2 MPG on the highway and about 13-15 MPG around town.

I LOVE that type of mileage. That's why I'm reluctant to bomb it, not too mention that whole transmission issue. One of these days I will probably change the pump timing and maybe the fuel plate, but otherwise I don't want to destroy this mileage.

My wife took her '97 to Denver and back last weekend. She got 19.5 for the trip.

(She rarely does the speed limit)

Bomb away mine gets 20-23 mpg consistantly no problem at 60-70 mph, 70-80 mph it drops and hoovers at 18-20, 15-18 around town or when im really on it and its no slouch and towing it gets 12-14 mpg. No exagerations ive had alot of people who own ford PSD's call BS until i go on a road trip with them.

Well I just filled up after a whole tank of not pulling the boat and with the extrmemely minor mods I have done, I got 520 miles on 32 gallons of fuel wich looked right at 16 mpg. My buddy is Cummins certified just got out of the Marines and is going to set my timing some time soon. Hopefully I can see 18 mpg in town after that is done.

Better mileage than most

I have a 97 2W 94,000 miles, Long Bed with absolutely NO mods (I do Have a shell on the back, though) and I always get 24-25 and have ALWAYS got this mileage since it was new. This is highway mileage of course.
My buddy next door bought his BECAUSE of the milkeage I get. He got a 98 24 Valve and he only gets 19-20 highway.
