Mileage/Drivetrain question
I am about to purchase a a 2001 or earlier Used Dodge Diesel Truck. I am going to be making long commutes (6 hour drive) on a regular basis and looking for the best fuel mileage possible. Can anyone tell me what kind of rear end gearing I should look for?
I know absolutely nothing about the subject.
Any other tips for purchase also welcome.
Thanks....gary moore

How to find out?
Is there someplace on the truck that will designate which rear end is in the truck or do you have to crack open the case?

Pop the hood open and look at the label on the hood. If it is still there (right by the latch) it will tell you.
Another option is to take the VIN to any dealer and get a build sheet.
May also list build information in the glovebox, or may find a tag on the axle.

I am sure you would not purchase without driving it. If it gets 70 mph at or near 2000 it is a 3.55. The 4.11 would be higher, 2200 to 2400. That is the key to mileage, 2000 or so at cruise. If it is lower that is good too.
