Hopefully someone can help. I have a 95 Dodge 2500 (cummins) 117,000 miles with an nv4500 5 speed transmission 4x4. About a month ago I developed a rattling noise that can be felt thru the gear shift **** and also thru the transfer ****. My local shop does not know what is wrong and they want to put a New Jasper tranny in for about 3200.00. (I just replaced the transfer case with a Jasper for 1200.00)

The noise is worse in low gears and I do not hear it at all in upper gears. No noise in Neutral. All gears shift smoothly. It may rattle a little worse at 2000 rpm, but can be heard at all rpm ranges. If I put it in 3rd unloaded and drift down a hill I can still hear it. It is NOT a tingy rattle, but a deep sound rattle.

My shop says it is NOT the clutch, that it is coming from the with in tranny. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what did you find. I am wondering if the clutch is causing noise that is radiating thru the tranny.

 

Best noise finding device , a cheap stethascope from parts house , has a metal rod on the end , touch suspected parts and you can find the ofending part , modifi to find exhaust & intake leaks - remove the rod/diaphram on the end of the hose and replace with metal tubing , as you get close to your ex. in. leak you'll hear it , about $20 .

 

Sorry, I actually got it wrong. The noise is only with 2nd and 3rd Gear. 1st, 4th, and 5th are fine.
