So it happened to my 1998 CTD 2500 4x4. On the freeway just motoring along and then no 5th gear. I've been looking at numerous different options to remedy the situation. The truck was used and now has approximately 123,000 miles on it. I recall the seller telling me the 5th gear issue had been "fixed" when I purchased the truck.

I went to the dealer today and after about 20 minutes of fumbling around they located the correct diagram and a few different bulletins pertaining to this issue. There is a new "Nut Package" (p/n # 5013887AA) that they sell for about $134, the one it replaces was about $45.

I researched the Torqueking products as well. They have two different kits available a complete kit with the main shaft and a retro fit kit.

The complete kit ($722 / in stock) requires the tranny to be pulled to make the swap.

The retro fit kit ($660 / sold out) can be done working through the transfer case, but they don't recommend it for any truck that had already had a failure previously.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these kits and how they worked or have any additional options to fix this problem with my truck? If I just get the new "Nut Package" will I just be buying some time until it happens again?

I'd pull transfer case and look at 5th gear, see what problem really is. Then get parts. It could have backed off. Just getnew lock nut/with set screw and loctite. May need new shaft. I'd look before I leap.
