Lost 5th Gear. Please Help.
Well 5th gear finally went today. My question is how big of a job is this to fix? Are there any parts that need to be ordered? Also does the tranny have to be pulled to fix? Thanks.

You don`t have to pull the tranny. Just take the aluminum housing off the back. There are several different ways to fix the problem. When mine goes I will probably just put the nut back on and tighten the S&y2t out of it.

Thanks for the reply. About tightening it, I was told 500 ft. lbs. at the dealership. Is this right or even possible? I plan on just tightening till I cannot possibly go anymore. Will this be suffecient?

When my 5th gear nut backed of and striped I put the new on as tight as possible then tack welded the nut just to make sure. I figure with 250k on the clock I can buy a little time with the fix to save up some cash for a new one.

One thing I would do when you get to around to fixing it, when the 12 point bolts are removed, replace them with allen head bolts. They strip very easy and the allen head bolts are easy to work with. You can torque them better and will have a better feel of them.
The nut Dodge replaced the stock one with, seems to do a good job. As far as a torque valve, I install mine with an air hammer, then tighten the set screw. I figure I have better than 300 lbs on it. Be sure the shaft and nut are very clean and dry. Use loctite red, and have at it. 3M brake cleaner is best to clean it with. It leaves no residue.
Anybody the puts 500 lbs on the nut, has a right arm the size of my leg. And if I ever see him, I'm runnin.

If you have a 10mm 12-point short socket, you can impact those bolts out of the tailhousing without stripping them.
The set screw(s) are in the fifth gear nut. One design uses set screws and brass pucks with a solid nut. The "split nut" had a small bolt that was tightened after the fifth gear nut was tightened.
When I first tried to torque the nut to spec. I had one guy standing on the tranny and another holding it. After that failed miserably, I made a fixture to hold the tranny. I was able to do it myself after that.

I was given the wrong nut and the new one has the set screw in it. I understand that now. I didnt get your e-mail turbo. I have it all back together now short of refilling the tranny and t-case with oil. Thanks again for all of your alls help.
