i have a 1998 12v 1 ton that i am using to move laods 3000 miles 12000lbs-20000lbs , truck is completely stock , i am going to put a cold air , 4 inch exhaust , bump the timing to 15-16 , going to put a water meth kit on it as well . what else should i be doing on this truck for better mpg

I think using syn gear lube will get you pretty close, without the big expense. Its funny, but when I had my PSD and frequentd those forums, they all wanted to know how to convert their manual hubs to one like we have on our dodges. Grass is always greener...

Add propane. It acts somewhat as a catalyst, helping the diesel burn better. When set up correctly, it will add more fuel mileage than cost. Oh, and more powertoo lol!

thanks guy , i can't ad LP to the truck i dont have any room for it in the truck , the truck has syn oil's already

I wouldn't spend the money on an intake. The stock airbox with a good filter is said to be good to 500hp and you can make a hole in the box and the firewall and connect them with a hose for a true cold air intake for under $50 if you already have the holesaw. I have a big cone and heat shield on mine and I want to go back to a stock box.

Some say running a 190* thermostat works wonders for fuel mileage. I put a 190* stat in my truck but didn't really notice anything mileage wise.... but then again I put it in just as it got colder and did not see a mileage drop, so maybe it did help....

If you want to try the stat thing, 45479 is the STANT part number I used. It's actually for a 440 BB but works perfectly. Drilled a 5/64" hole in it to prevent temp surging. Been working real well all winter for me.

Mine cost $2 since I had the holesaw.

Cold air intakes do lower mpgs by lowering egts which in turn allow you to stay in a higher gear while towing or on hills.

I doubt a cold air intake would help out a stock truck in towing mpg's. Stock plate doesn't really give enough fuel to make EGT's an issue does it? My EGT's were never a problem until I ground my plate to a 100.

The "Filter Minder" on my stock airbox with clean paper filter was showing all red after a short/spirited trip with just a 100 plate and 3k spring. I have since replaced with a BHAF.

3000 miles should say it's lots of hi-way driving, you need taller tires and/or larger wheels to get the engine RPM down.

I'd be curious to see what the results would have been with a good aftermarket filter. There was a graph on Cummins Forum showing the air intake temps at the filter with 4 or 5 different set ups. The BHAF sucked in the hottest air, the stock with a hole ducted to the cowl was the coldest.

How dirty was your filter? Mine's a little dirty but with a 100 plate pushing 45lbs boost (a little too often ) my filter minder has not moved.... I do not have a 3K GSK though.... yet

i have a cold air system for it already , truck has 235 85 16 on it , and it has 3,54 gear , i am hoping to get 16-18 mpg
