Suggest you provide more information about your truck. Auto vs manual? Year? And so on.
In general, first a set of gauges. Again, if auto, you'll need an auto trans temp gauge. Certainly a boost gauge and a pyrometer whether auto or not.
Make sure you have the KDP fixed. A fuel plate and governor spring kit would be next on my list. If a stock auto, plan on it being a problem area as you increase the fueling. Conversely, if a manual, plan on a better clutch at some point. Also, you can add more air with a better air filtration system and a bigger exhaust will also help your diesel to perform better by keeping exhaust gas temps lower to not destroy the turbo.
This is basically what I've done to my two 1996s, one an auto and the other a manual. They're not extreme performers, but they do run very strong without two much additional stress and strain on the trucks.
