Limited slip?

I have a 97 dodge diesel with the Dana 80 hybrid. Is this a limited slip differential?

Well, raise the hood, and look at the little tag by the latch, on the bottom of the hood itself. It should tell you which axles you have, what gear ratio you have(it will be either 3:54, or 4:10), and whether or not the rear end has limited slip or not. Some were, and some werent. Need anything else?

well, im no pro-but....from my understanding, if ya dont see a tag hooked to one of your cover bolts telling you to add a lim slip additive , you can simply jack up the rear of the truck to get both tires off of the ground.then, rotate one of the wheels back and forth by hand-if the other wheel does exactly the same thing, its our type of lsd.

The tag by the hood latch says it is a Dana 80 HYB 3.54 and nothing else. I dont remember a tag on the diff saying to add a limited slip additive. I will check the tire rotation and see tommorrow. It kinda looks like I prob dont have it.
Thanks guys,
Mat

go about 5 mph... 2nd gear, turn the wheel 1/2 turn to the right and punch it. If you spin a tire, it's open. if the back wants to swap ends with the front, it's a limited slip.

You must not have it, because it should say on the tag if you do.

I took it out on some wet grass on an incline and broke the tires loose in the back and it just sat there and spun one tire. I tried to get it to lock up by tapping and or holding the brakes but to no avail. I would say it does not have lmd slip from that experience and also no tags etc. Bummer.

I guessing you dont. With my truck, it will spin both tires every time, so either your LS isnt working, or you dont have one, ands im guessing you must not.

Mine is a limited slip diff and when I got STUCK last friday on mushy grass both tires spun 1 to 1. There is a set amount of torque that must be applied before the rear wheels will un-lock on a LS, tho I am not sure how much. I DO know however that it pretty much takes pavement to do it.

With a limited slip if you have one tire on ice and the other on dry pavement will the one on ice slip?

depends on how it is setup, most of the time both should grip, but if it is wore out the tire on ice will spin and you may not get much torque to the other think of it as a 15-85 split .

both should grab when throttle is applied. though you wont get perfect operation out of the LSD meaning you wont have a 50/50 power split, ice is just too easy, but if you can get 40/60, your doing all right. My old Plok would spin just a little faster on the ice than the hard pavement until it had ramped up then i really couldn't tell at all that one tire was on ice.

Thanks Ddestruel for you input. I am thinking about putting a limited slip or a locker of some kind in there but the cost makes me think twice. What do you guys recommend?

Look around on Ebay for a D70 or D70HD Power Lok, it had the right spline side gears, and will fit either a D70 or D80. I picked my old one up for $100 on ebay put a kit in it and since i had a D80 i needed the 70 HD unit with ABS ring slot, i had the ring gear bolt holes opened up to fit the 80 bolts and the 80 ABS ring fits. Ran it for years that way. Really good road and ice manners predictable and very effective
