KDP years and control module question
Do the 1998 12 valves suffer from the KDP issue?
This may be a dumb question but what is the main purpose of the (ECM) Engine Control Module and TPS in a 1998 12 valve w/manual trans?
Thanks,
Don

'98s definitely have the KDP problem.
There is no ECM on 12 valves. There is a PCM (powertrain control module)but it doesn't control anything on the engine, which is totally mechanical except for the shutdown solenoid.
The PCM controls most of the gauges, wait to start, water in fuel, cruise control and auto tranny shifting. The voltage regulator is also in the PCM.
The TPS (throttle position sensor) is only used on 12 valves with automatics and as the name implies senses the throttle position for tranny shifting.

Thanks for the KDP answer.
The TPS is what prompted my ECM/PCM question. My truck has a TPS due to it originally being an automatic but the 1998 12 valve factory manual trans truck that I will be doing some work on also has a TPS. I thought it may have something to do with the EGR.

TPS regulates the a/c operation, egr solenoid, alternator, cruise, lots of different things. Almost anything that can load the engine is dependant on the TPS to tell the PCM if it is o.k. Like at full throttle, the PCM will shut off the a/c for more available engine power ect.. Also the EGR will only operate at a certain tps range and engine temp ect.
